Lifestyle Changes During Covid-19

COVID-19 pandemic is a global threat that’s creating life-changing circumstances worldwide. With numerous cases being daily detected in various nations, it’s triggered a health alarm. The pandemic that began in the city of Wuhan, China, during late 2019 has now become a worldwide health emergency. With over 1.6 million infected individuals globally, we have seen over 100,000 casualties.

Though adequate measures are in place to flatten the curve of COVID-19, new cases are springing up daily. Measures like complete lockdown are actively enacted by various governments to mitigate the spread of the virus. People now have to isolate themselves in their houses and maintain social distancing for safety reasons. Corporate sectors are asking their employees to work from home. We also find colleges and schools closed, and students are also moving onto online teaching modes. Borders are closing with travel facilities being cut short. The same applies to malls, bars, and theatres.

No event has ever affected the entire globe in such a profound and pervasive manner in recent history. This brings to attention how fragile we are physical as the virus is capable of toppling daily routines, undermining the economic safety and isolating people from one another. Life was brought a standstill for many. We find frontline health workers facing frightening scenarios that have become a new normal these days. Most individuals consider these are combating measures to be temporary that are maybe up to six or at most 12 months. They presume that life will return to normal, and business will resume as usual. To a certain extent, it can be real. However, some of the changes that this event has brought about may end up being permanent.

Though this virus might appear as an external shock, fundamentally, it’s reshaping some of the main areas of the way we live our lives. Instead of reverting and bouncing back to the previous state, some changes may end up being permanent. Here are some of the most significant lifestyle changes COVID-19 has brought about:

Greeting People:

The greeting is essential for addressing individuals that we meet around us daily or those whom we encounter for the first time. On a regular basis, we mostly prefer hugging our friends or shaking hands during first-time encounters. However, things have changed due to the health emergency caused due to the coronavirus. The virus is commonly transmitted through fluid contents dispersed into the air as you sneeze or cough and also by being in close contact with positive patients. Hence coming in bodily contact with the coronavirus patients can act as a medium.

Though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initially allowed individuals to go for elbow bump instead of a handshake, these days, greetings have been all together nullified. The WHO and other concerned health authorities suggest that social distancing is the best way to reduce the impact. By following social distancing or staying 6 feet away from one another, you won’t be able to greet one another using handshakes. The best way would be to join your hands to welcome those around us.

Weekend plans and gatherings:

The most awaited days of each week are Saturdays and Sundays, where you get to destress yourself and relax. After keeping up with the busy office schedules and the weekly monotonous working routines, you might end up feeling the blue. That’s when you wish to relax the weekend with your buddies to get rid of the pressure.

Due to the pandemic of COVID-19, most of the nations are instituting a stay at home order. This has resulted in a ban on all sorts of gatherings. It has disrupted your typical weekend plans with your family and friends, where you usually either watch a movie, go to a local tourist spot, or go out for dining. Various festivals and celebrations are being canceled. You will also find hotels, bars, and restaurants all over the world are shutting their doors. They are opting for either the free home delivery option or the drive-through and pick up option where you get to remain contactless.

It’s best to introduce new entertainment plans and changes to spice up recreational activities until the situation is back to normal. You can binge-watch television series on various platforms such as Hotstar or Netflix. Or else, try taking up online musical classes, piano lessons, indulging in a long lost hobby, or reading books to occupy yourself.

Working Remotely:

Flexible work arrangements are becoming more widespread these days. Extensive work from home can be quite harmful for the employees. This is because they tend to work on might be even asked to work for extended periods. These come along with the numerous downsides for the company as it enhances the cost of coordination. Organizations may also lose the critical benefits of physical presence that leads to team spirit and building relationships among coworkers. Considering these aspects, the physical office space has come across some sort of revival.

However, the recent pandemic has resulted in making work from home a necessity. Employers and employees are working together to construct competencies and finding ways to do it efficiently. Individuals have no other choice but to create new routines to work remotely. Organizations are finding different ways to create online platforms for coworkers to interact together with other than the formal meetings. It enhances the workplace relationships, which is essential for the resilience and innovation of a business. You may have to wait and watch to see what will come up as a water cooler where the colleagues can meet up for gossiping and creative innovations. The teleworking policies implemented by the working world has impacted lots of employees in one way or the other. Coronavirus has forced us to enhance our remote working capabilities, which may emerge as an alternative to working in offices in the future.

Tele-schooling:

As for schools and educational institutions, countries across the world have shut down for extensive periods to safeguard the interests of students. As per the Education week, millions of students have been virtually impacted due to this lockdown. Students who are aspirating for higher studies abroad have come to a standstill as nations have their borders closed for safety reasons. Many who are looking for doing their projects under various organizations are left with no further options. As for those who have reached the end of their course, are facing unknown extensions concerning their final examinations.

However, the lockdown resulted in schools and colleges adopting tele schooling and online coaching methods. Hence the students no longer have to worry about any disruptions that will impact their education.

Masks:

As the cases for COVID – 19 are rising beyond control, talks on whether the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would alter their policy for wearing masks persisted. This is because CDC previously mentioned that only those patients who are COVID 19 positive need to wear masks.

However, due to the rise in cases, the CDC recommends wearing face masks or cloth coverings in public places where social distancing are hard to manage. This is mandatory in places like pharmacies and grocery outlets. As a result, individuals went into a frenzy of stockpiling masks in bulk, thereby cleaning up the shelves in local stores. It resulted in medical professionals facing a lack of insufficient personal protective equipment and a shortage of N95 masks. It can have a significant impact on the health workers as they are in direct contact with the severely affected patients. It has eventually resulted in the mass production of protective gear to facilitate the upcoming and rising needs for protection. Now masks are becoming the new fashion statement as they are available in various styles and designs.
